Looking north from the Bordyke junction, both views show Graylings (No. 214 High Street), on the left and the former Tonbridge School chapel in the distance. Between them, in the 'then' picture, stands another large house, Ferox Place, and beside it the original 1553 school building, most of which was pulled down in 1862 when new school buildings were constructed further back from the road. At least a dozen items of street furniture clutter the modern view, compared with a single gas lamp in the earlier one.
