Apart from the removal of ivy and a spurious chimney, the Castle Gatehouse and its associated 'mansion' have changed little in the 140 years separating the 'then' and 'now' photos. In the 1860s it was still in private hands, rented out to educational establishments until the Council bought it for the town for £10,000 in 1897.
