The view is of Hadlow Road at the Mill Lane junction, looking in the Maidstone direction. The Tonbridge to Maidstone road was turnpiked in 1765, and the toll house and gate shown here – one of several along the route – remained until 1868. A roadside marker on the corner of Mill Lane now commemorates it. The property on the right, now called Tollgate House, appears in both views.
